Cavani Quartet

2014-15 Master Quartet in Residence

September 23-24, 2014 & February 24-26, 2015

Master Quartet-in-Residence

Best for schools with existing strings programs

This is a one week residency each year by a well-established string quartet with top performing credentials and experience teaching at the major conservatory level. Activities will focus solely upon those middle and high schools that already have well-established string ensemble programs, using the proven combination of a lecture-demonstration and a coaching session.

About the Cavani String Quartet

The Cavani String Quartet was formed in 1984 and has been steadfastly devoted to the mission of performing chamber music at the very highest artistic level as well as developing and fostering transformative musical experiences for new and existing audiences of all ages and all walks of life. On the faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music since 1988, the quartet's musical career maintains an energetic balance between performing masterpieces by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Bartok; collaborating with living composers including Joan Tower and Margaret Brouwer; and creating new programming that joins multiple disciplines, such as visual art, poetry, and dance.

Program Information

Scheduling – Each participating school will be visited for one half day, with two program sessions per school: a lecture demonstration session in which the quartet performs, and a coaching session in which advanced students perform and receive instruction from the quartet.

Program partner preparation – The CMSD will provide information about the ensemble with teachers and students, and the student string ensemble repertoire will be collected and shared with the ensemble.

Follow up and evaluation – the CMSD will work with the orchestra directors at the participating schools to develop assessment materials that require the students to complete information based on the artists’ presentations (works performed, points made by artists, etc…) as well as qualitative responses requiring the students to compare pieces, offer their impressions and share their key learnings.

Participation fee – $750 half day (up to two sessions), $1,250 full day (three to four sessions).  Limited scholarships to defray program costs are available.  For details, please contact Willa Walker, CMSD Vice President, at (248) 737-6113 or Willa.Walker@ChamberMusicDetroit.org.
